Garth Malarchuk

1 WHA Game

December 18, 1976 Calgary Cowboys vs Quebec Nordiques. 4-2 win.

December, 1976 the Calgary Cowboys were without goalie Don McLeod when he came down with a case of the flu. They looked to local goalie Garth Malarchuk to temporarily fill the void left by McLeod. Malarchuk had played professionally in 1975/76 but when the Cowboys called he was only playing recreationally in the Calgary area. Malarchuk dressed as Gary Bromley's backup for a game against the Nordiques.

In 1974 Garth Malarchuk was drafted by the NHL's Washington Capitals and the WHA's Toronto Toros. He signed with the Capitals but spent his two years with the club in the minors. Malarchuk remained in hockey after leaving the net. He became a scout for the Toronto Maple Leafs and coached the WHL's Kelowna Rockets. Brother Clint was a successful NHL goalie.
