Jim Grant

  1 NHL Game

January 27, 1980 Edmonton Oilers vs Philadelphia Flyers. 3-4 loss.

January 27, 1980 the Edmonton Oilers were hosting the Philadelphia Flyers when, shortly before game time, the Oilers lost goalie Eddie Mio to injury and needed a new backup for Jim Corsi. Enter Jim Grant, a 20 year old student at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, where he tended net for the school's hockey team. The Oilers gave him the unexpected call to be their emergency backup, and Grant happily obliged. He was given $100, a ticket to the game for his girlfriend and a couple of goalie sticks in return for his services. "I'm just thrilled that I got the chance," said Grant in an article that appeared in the Edmonton Journal the following day. "I would have worked for free, but they paid me anyway."
"On one hand, I was hoping nothing would happen to Corsi," said Grant. "But, still I it would have been something to write home about if I'd just got into a game for a few minutes. Just to say, I'd played in an NHL game." Although he never played, Grant can boast that for one game, he was an NHL teammate of Wayne Gretzky. (1)
