A one time member of the prestigious US National Development Team, Joe Cannata was drafted by the Canucks in 2009 while he was playing for Merrimack College in Boston. He was an NCAA All-Star in his last year at Merrimack and in 2012 signed a two-year entry-level deal with the Canucks.

Late into the 2012/2013 season Vancouver goalie Cory Schneider suffered what the team called a 'body injury.' Listed as day-to-day, the Canucks recalled Joe Cannata to dress as Roberto Luongo's backup until Schneider was ready to return. Canata's stay lasted through the final 2 games of the regular season and the first two games of the playoffs. He came very close to seeing NHL minutes as Luongo allowed 5 goals in the third period of the team's 2-7 April 27th loss to the Oilers. Unfortunately for Canata, coach Vigneault elected to keep Luongo in the game regardless of the bad outing he was having.

Cannata found himself back in the ECHL to start the 2014/15 season. He was named to the league's All-Star team and briefly recalled to the AHL but remained low on the Canuck's depth chart. In the summer of 2015 Cannata was re-signed by the Canucks to a one-year contract and promoted to the AHL.

Late December, 2015 Joe Cannata was recalled to the NHL when Ryan Miller needed some time to rest. Cannata dressed as backup to Jacob Markstrom for six games while Miller recovered.
