In 2006 Tyson Sexsmith reached the Memorial Cup as a backup goalie with the Vancouver Giants. The following season he had a breakout year and the Giants reached the Memorial Cup again, this time with Sexsmith as their starter. With Sexsmith in goal the Giants won the tournament and claimed their first ever Memorial Cup. The tournament gave Sexsmith's stock a boost and the Sharks selected him that summer in the NHL entry draft with their third round pick.

In the summer of 2008 Sexsmith was signed to a three-year, entry-level deal by the Sharks. He left the WHL as the league's all-time shutout leader with 26, all accumulate while he was a member of the Vancouver Giants.

Tyson Sexsmith was recalled to the San Jose Sharks for one day early February, 2012. When Antti Niemi suffered a minor injury in practice the team opted to sit him for a game. Sexsmith was given the call to dress as backup to Thomas Greiss. Sexsmith was returned to the AHL the following morning.

The Sharks decided not to offer Sexsmith another contract following the 2011/2012 season. He was later given a tryout by Calgary's AHL team but would never again come close to the NHL. Sexsmith retired after the 2012/13 season.
