Markus Ketterer was named Best Goaltender of the 1986/87 World Junior Championship, leading Finland to a Gold Medal. He was not drafted until 1992 when the Buffalo Sabres claimed him in the fifth round. From 1989 to 1992 Ketterer backstopped his SM-liiga team to four  league Championships in a row. In 1990/91, he was named the league's Best Goaltender. He represented Finland at the 1992 World Championship and won a Silver Medal. He also represented Finland at the Olympic games that year. Ketterer then spent two seasons in North America, from 1993-1995.

November 24, 1993 Buffalo Sabres goalie Grant Fuhr injured his knee in a game against the New Jersey Devils. Fuhr required surgery and missed 29 games, all of which Markus Ketterer sat as a backup to Dominik Hasek. The Sabres went 16-9-4 over the 29 game stretch and Hasek never allowed more than 4 goals in single game. Ketterer was sitting behind one of the league's best. February 2, 1994 Grant Fuhr returned and Ketterer was sent back to the minors. He had spent over two months with the Sabres. Unfortunately for Ketterer, he was stuck behind one of the era's best goaltenders, Hasek, who was just entering the prime of his Hall of Fame career.

March 16, 1995 Dominik Hasek strained his left rotator cuff in a game against the New York Islanders. Markus Ketterer was recalled from the AHL to dress as backup to Robb Stauber. Hasek missed three games, all of which were played by Stauber. Ketterer returned to Europe at season's end.

The 1996/97 season saw Ketterer win a final league championship in Sweden's SHL. He retired following the 1998/99 season. Since 2011, he has worked for Jokerit's Liiga team in Finland, currently serving as Goaltending Coach and Team Manager.
