Jean-Francois Racine played in the 2000 CHL Top Prospects Game during his first season of major junior hockey. The Toronto Maple Leafs drafted Racine in the third round of the 2000 NHL draft. Toronto signed Racine to an entry-level contract in 2002.
November, 2006 there was a groin injury sidelining Andrew Raycroft and Mikael Tellqvist unable to dress due to a broken right finger. Jean-Stebastien Aubin was given Toronto's starting job against the Montreal Canadiens. The goalie shuffle opened the backup position and Jean-Francois Racine was called upon to fill the role. It marked the last time a pair of french Canadians have been entrusted with the Leaf net. It was a nationally televised CBC Hockey Night in Canada game that also featured festivities from the Hockey Hall of Fame weekend. Mikeal Tellqvist was available to return for the team's next game on November, 16 and so Racine was returned to the AHL.
