   May, 2021 Alex D'Orio got his first taste of the NHL when the Pittsburgh Penguins lost both their goalies, Tristan Jarry and Casey DeSmith, to minor injuries. The Penguins recalled Alex D'Orio on an emergency basis to serve as backup to Maxime Lagace. 

    D'Orio's second stint in the NHL came during the 2022 NHL playoffs. Louis Domingue took over the Pittsburgh net in the first round playoff series against New York after injuries to both Tristan Jarry and Casey DeSmith. D'Orio was recalled to dress as Domingue's backup and spent five games on the Pens bench.
