Ed Walsh

At Least 3 NHL Games

October 8, 1975 Montreal Canadiens vs Los Angeles Kings. 9-0 win.
October 9, 1975 Montreal Canadiens vs Boston Bruins. 9-4 win.
October 11, 1975 Montreal Canadiens vs St. Louis Blues. 7-2 win.

The Montreal Canadiens recalled Ed Walsh from the Nova Scotia Voyageurs at the beginning of the 1975/76 NHL season when regular backup Michel Larocque fractured his ankle at a home accident. The Canadiens were a powerhouse and with one of the best goalie of all time in the crease, Ken Dryden, Walsh spent all his time in the NHL on the bench. It is very possible that Walsh appeared in more than three NHL games as a backup with the Habs over his time with the organization.

The Canadiens signed Ed Walsh as a free agent June, 1974 after he completed his college career at Boston University. Walsh was a college All-Star and team MVP in his last season with BU. In 1974 the Montreal Canadiens signed Walsh, who was a free agent. Walsh spent the next four years with the Habs and was known as one of the best goalies not in the NHL. In 1974, 1975 and 1976 Walsh shared the Harry 'Hap' Holmes Memorial Award with Dave Elenbaas as the AHL goalie pair with the league's lowest goals against average. In 1976 and 1977 Walsh helped the Nova Scotia Voyageurs win the Calder Cup as AHL champions. With the Voyageurs, Walsh was also named a first team AHL All-Star in 1974/75 and 1976/77. His exceptional play got him noticed internationally by the United States. He represented the USA at the 1974 and 1981 World Ice Hockey Championships. In 1978 Walsh signed a contract with the WHA's Edmonton Oilers. He was unable to latch on with the Oilers, stuck behind Dave Dryden and Ed Mio he only played 3 games. Walsh finished the season with the Dallas Back Hawks, winning the Adams Cup as CHL champions. He attended the 1980 Boston Bruins training camp but after not making the cut he decided to hang up his pads.
