March 27, 1977 goalie Ed Giacomin injured his left knee, ending his season. With only 4 games left in the 1976/77 NHL season and long out of the playoffs, the Red Wings recalled minor league goalie Mike Frawley on a 10-day trial. Frawley, who had been playing for the Campbellton Tigers of the New Brunswick Senior Hockey League, spent the remainder of the NHL season as Jim Rutherford's backup. Frawley was Red Wings property and had played minor pro in the Detroit system a year earlier.

Frawley played senior hockey with the Campbellton Tigers until 1989. His younger brother, Dan, played a few seasons in the NHL.
