The Minnesota Wild drafted Swedish netminder Johan Gustafsson in the 6th round of the 2010 NHL entry draft. He later gained notoriety when he backstopped Sweden to a World Junior Championship Gold medal in 2012. Gustafsson was named one of four finalist for the 2012/2013 SHL rookie of the year award. That season he also won another International Gold medal with team Sweden, this time at the Men's World Championship. Gustafsson was ready to make the move to North America for the 2013/2014 season.

Late October, 2013 the Minnesota Wild recalled Johan Gustafsson to serve as their backup for a game against the Chicago Blackhawks. Josh Harding was out with a minor injury so Gustafsson dressed as Niklas Backstrom's backup.

Gustafsson's second call up of the 2013/2014 NHL season came mid November when Niklas Backstrom was sidelined with a concussion. Gustafsson dressed behind Josh Harding for two games. After it became apparent that Backstom's injury was a serious one the team opted to send Gustafsson back to the AHL in favour of a more seasoned goalie in Darcy Kuemper.

The Wild recalled Gustafsson for a third time during the 2013/2014 season mid December. Josh Harding was slated to miss three games as he received treatment for multiple sclerosis. Johan dressed as Niklas Backstrom's backup.

January, 2014 Johan Gustafsson received his fourth call up from the Wild, this time to backup Darcy Kuemper as both Josh Harding and Niklas Backstrom were sidelined with injuries. He lasted just one game before Backstrom was back in uniform.

Gustafsson's fifth stint with the Wild came when both Harding and Backstrom were injured again. He dressed as Darcy Kuemper's backup in Minnesota's last game before the Olympic break. Unfortunately for Gustafsson, the Wild signed goalie John Curry later that month, replacing him as the team's new call up option.
