Tyler Plante was born in Milwaukee but raised in Canada. He was born in America while his father was playing professional hockey. His dad, Cam, played for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Tyler's brother, Alex, also played in the NHL.

As a member of the Brandon Wheat Kings, Tyler Plante was named the WHL's 2004/2005 rookie of the year. He was also named to the CHL's All-Rookie team. Drafted 32nd overall by the Panthers that summer, he was the third goalie chosen in the draft, behind only Carey Price and Tuuka Rask. In 2007, Florida signed Plante to an entry-level NHL contract.

Tomas Vokoun's bad back caused him to miss the final two games of the 2009/2010 NHL regular season. Tyler Plante was recalled from Rochester to dress as Scott Clemmensen's backup. Plante's contract with Florida expired that summer but he was resigned by the team to a one-year, two-way deal.

Tyler Plante was recalled on two separate occasions during the 2010/2011 NHL season. The first came on March 22 as Scott Clemmesen was recovering from a minor knee injury. Clemmensen missed 2 games, both of which Plante dressed as backup to Tomas Vokoun. Less than a week later Plante was again recalled to the Panthers. This time Vokoun was suffering from back spasms. Plante dressed as Scott Clemmensen's backup for three games before Vokoun was ready to return. That summer the Panthers re-signed Plante to another one-year, two-way contract.

December, 2011 the Panthers placed Plante on unconditional waivers with the end result being contract termination. Jacob Markstrom had won the battle as Florida's #2 goalie and subsequently Plante became expendable. He finished the 2011/2012 season in Sweden. The summer of 2012 Plante signed a try out deal with the Winnipeg Jets' AHL team in St. John's but he was released less than a month later without starting any games for the team.

From 2013 to 2015 he played pro in Norway with Lorenskog.
