After playing a couple seasons for the University of Maine, Frank Doyle's first pro contract came from the ECHL's Idaho Steelheads. He impressed scouts in the ECHL and in the summer of 2005 was signed by the New Jersey Devils.

Towards the end of March, 2006 the New Jersey Devils were in the playoff hunt and desperate for wins. In an attempt to gain some competitive advantage for their March 24th contest, the Devils sent goalie Scott Clemmensen, who was their projected starter, home to New Jersey by himself for some rest. Martin Brodeur was to start their March 23rd game so Clemmensen would not have been needed and GM Lou Lamoriello thought it best to send him home for some needed time off. Frank Doyle was recalled to serve as Clemmensen's temporary replacement and Brodeur's backup.

Just a couple weeks later Frank Doyle received his second call up from New Jersey. Doyle dressed as Brodeur's backup for a second time when Scott Clemmensen came down with a sudden case of the flu.

In 2007, Frank Doyle was resigned by the New Jersey Devils to a one-year contract. He spent the entire season in the AHL. The following year he travelled overseas to play in Germany. In 2010, Doyle was signed to a one-year contract by the San Jose Sharks. He was never able to crack their roster. Since then Doyle has played pro in Italy and England.
