Daren Machesney played in the 2004/05 CHL Top Prospects game and in 2005 was drafted in the fifth round of the NHL entry draft by the Washington Capitals. In 2006, Washington signed Machesney to a three-year, entry-level contract.
Daren Machesney's first taste of the NHL came December, 2006 when Washington Capitals backup netminder Brent Johnson came down with a severe case of the flu. Since it was destined to be a short stay and the likelihood of Johnson's replacement see any ice time was small, the Capitals opted to recall Machesney, low on the team depth chart, from the ECHL. He dressed as backup to Olaf Kolzig for one game.
Machesney's second stint in the NHL came later that season when Brent Johnson suffered a minor injury. Since the extent of Johnson's injury was not known the Capitals once again opted to recall their ECHL goalie vs their AHL netminders. After two more games as Kolzig's backup the team sent Machesney back to the minors in favor of Frederik Cassivi, a more experienced goalie who was playing for Washington's AHL affiliate.
Almost two years later, in 2009, Machesney got his third taste of the NHL. Machesney was recalled to dress as Jose Theodore's backup for a two game period as Brent Johnson recovered from a minor injury.
Machesney's last stint in the NHL came under some interesting circumstances. With a flu ravaging their team the Capitals had to do some roster moves in preparation for their March 24th game against the Toronto Maple Leafs. In order to fit all their players under the salary cap the Capitals had to send goalie Semyon Varlamov to the AHL and recall Machesney, who had a cheaper contract. Machesney dressed as Jose Theodore's backup for one game and the team was able to fit Varlamov in under the cap for their next match.
Machesney helped the Hersey Bears win the 2008/09 Calder Cup in his last season with the Capitals organization.  In the summer of 2009 he signed a tryout agreement with the Vancouver Canucks but was released without a contract.  He attended the 2010 Columbus Blue Jacket training camp but was once again left without a contract offer.
