A first round draft pick by the Devils in 1999, Ari Ahonen would get 5 stints with the Devils over 3 seasons. He dressed in 18 NHL games over that span, not seeing a single minute of game action.

From the golden land of goalies, Finland, Ari Ahonen was a superb junior player for his country. At the 1999 world under 18 tournament he guided Finland to a gold medal and was named best goalie and tournament All-Star. At the 2001 World Junior Championships he helped Finland capture a Silver medal and was named to the All-Star team. The Devils quickly signed him to a three-year entry-level NHL contract.

After a couple seasons in the AHL, Ahonen's first taste of the big leagues was a quick one game call up mid January, 2003 when Corey Schwab came down with a case of the flu. Ahonen dressed as Martin Brodeur's backup.

A little over a month later Ahonen again dressed as Brodeur's backup. This time it was because Schwab briefly left the team to be with his wife as she gave birth to the couple's second child.

Ahonen's third stint in the NHL game during the 2003/2004 season.  From December 10th to 13th he dressed as Brodeur's backup while Corey Schwab was recovering from a groin injury.

Later that December, Ahonen was recalled to the Devils for a fourth time when Schwab once again was recovering from a groin injury. Ahonen dressed as Brodeur's backup for a seven game stretch until Schwab was healthy enough to return.

Ahonen's fifth and last stint in the NHL game during the 2005/2006 season. He dressed as Scott Clemmensen's backup for 6 games while Martin Brodeur recovered from a knee injury.

Ari Ahonen went back to Europe for the 2006/2007 season and has not returned to North America.

  • Wore #31 in all games with New Jersey Devils
