Steve Rexe might be most notable for being the first player ever drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins. He was offered a one-year deal by the club after they selected him 2nd overall in 1967 but Rexe turned down the offer. Instead, he signed on with Father David Bauer's Team Canada National team, fresh off a 3rd place finish at the 1968 Olympics. Unfortunately for Rexe, the National Team was disbanded in 1970, before Rexe had the chance to play in the Olympics. After a couple years of senior hockey in Belleville rehabbing a bad surgery, Rexe signed his first pro contract with the WHA's 1972/73 Los Angeles Sharks.
Steve Rexe died of cancer in 2013 but the long time Belleville resident was asked about his time in the NHL by a local publication before he passed away. "I never did play a game with the Kings," said Rexe. "I played in a lot of exhibition games and dressed in all kinds of games. What they said to me was that 'if Vachon was playing average Rexe gets in, the job is his.' But every time I went up he'd get three shutouts in six games or whatever. So I was known and the hi and bye boy."(1)
Rexe spent two years with the Los Angeles Kings organization. In 1975, he backstopped the LA Kings' AHL affiliate to a Calder Cup Championship. He spent his post-hockey life in Belleville, Ontario and made a living as an import-export car salesman.

Rexe went with Team Canada to the World Championships in Stockholm in 1969. He dressed as backup to Wayne Stephenson for the first half of the tournament (5 games). Then Rexe hurt his knee badly and was replaced by Ken Dryden who was brought in from Cornell University. (Good job with the site, by the way)
